The continuing education of a young feminist.
In honor of Alexandra Kogut, 18, who was murdered by her boyfriend this past weekend. She was a freshman at Brockport University in upstate New York, where I’m speaking tonight.
Alex’s life - her talents, her dreams, and all that she gave to the world - are unique and beautiful. The manner of her death, however, is far too common. To put the scourge of intimate partner violence in stark perspective, more American women have been killed by their boyfriends and husbands since 9/11 than were killed in 9/11, Iraq, and Afghanistan combined.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, often overshadowed by the pink invasion of Breast Cancer Awareness, also this month in the US. (Ironic, yes, that two huge killers of women have to share one month, as if our lives matter for 1/12th of the calendar!) Intimate partner violence doesn’t always result in death and it doesn’t happen to any one type of person. Even though women are more likely to be victims of intimate partner violence, of course it can and does happen to men.  If you or a loved one need to speak to someone about a relationship you think might be abusive, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. While this resource is recommended as safe for queer and trans folks by Rainbow Connection, LGBT folks can also call the National LGBT Help Center, at 1-888-843-4564 to be directed to safe and welcoming services in your area.
