It’s October 1st, which means that for the next 30 days retailers will be peddling costumes to teen girls that are sexualized to the point of absurdity. Want to be a cheerleader? Be a sexy goth cheerleader! Want to be a cupcake? Be a sexy cupcake! And don’t even get me started on the racist costumes out there that combine cultural appropriation with gross sexualization. Sexy Teen Native American Princess, anyone? Or is Sexy Teen Arabian Princess more your style?

But perhaps the best visual representation of the sexualization of girls costumes I’ve ever seen comes courtesy of Target’s Crayola costume, which is sold for both boys and girls. Boys - and parents of teen boys - have the option of choosing a Crayola costume that…actually looks like a crayon. Teen girls - and parents of teen girls - have the option of…sexy Crayon! (Also, probably cold Crayon - why do the boys always get to dress appropriately for the time of the year where in most places it’s cold?!)
